Just today:

I learned that the Golf Country (wicked factory off road version of the Mk2 Golf) was lifted over 4 inches for a total of around 7 inches of ground clearance!

I learned the absolutely mental Cobalt SS was essentially a parts bin special -they had a powerful 4 cylinder from the Saturn Ion Red Line and figured they'd put it in the less weird Cobalt and people would care, which they did- and that its epoch-making 260hp powertrain was only a later upgrade -again, borrowed from another car, the Pontiac Solstice GXP- once the original engine no longer met emission requirements. And that it had a sedan version!!!

And, while writing this post, I looked for details on how this lapped the King-Daddy, longest and most gruelling monster of all circuits that is the Nürburgring faster than the all-wheel-drive six-figure Japanese demigod that is the Skyline GT-R, and found out about the popular misconception that this refers to the R34 Nissan Skyline (right), to date the most coveted and sought after, whereas it actually refers to the R32 (left), a prior version -though not much less groundbreaking in its own time- and that the nonetheless staggering feat may largely be attributable to tire formulations having vastly improved between 1990 and 2008.

I learned of the Ford Transit Sportvan, a confusingly diesel sporty? version of the Ford Transit!

Hell, I learned about a small 20s brand I didn't even know existed!

I find out new things about cars every week, and that's not every day just because most days I run out of time to read and listen and browse all the car-related content I would want to (hence me writing this at 2:30AM, cough cough). Every model has an intricate story usually originating years before its birth, thousands of parts, usually dozens of variations year over year, mountains of media created around it and thousands of examples that have gone around to be featured in movies, owned by celebrities, and participate in history in other thousands of minuscule little ways. Multiply this for thousands of models worldwide and then multiply that for a century and a half. However narrow your area of interest, if you think you know as much as most of the car trivia within it you are absolutely a fool.

Well, still today, I learned that our dear Saturn Vue, remember our dear Saturn Vue? Well, not @makenoplans's, the second generation, it turns out that 1. at fucking least it drove well and 2. it died along with Saturn itself when GM went bankrupt and a clause stipulated for the government bailout was to kill three of its brands - Saturn being one of their least successful at the time I WONDER FUCKING WHY I WONDER IF THERE WAS ANYTHING ONE COULD HAVE DONE TO SAVE IT LIKE NOT EVISCERATING ALL LIFE OUT OF IT AND TURN ITS CORPSE INTO AN AMERICAN DISTRIBUTOR FOR A MEDIOCRE GERMAN CAR BRAND i am calm i am calm i am digressing. Well they'd relatively speaking just started making the second gen Vue in Mexico and they were like aw cmon do we really have to stop selling it so soon? And so they just fucking. Used the "Chevrolet Captiva Sport" branding it was sold with in South America to sell it to rental companies. It's basically like a fake ID but it's no faker than the one you started off with.

Oh! And a bit less recently I found out that bafflingly you could get the first generation Honda Civic with three different trunk doors - seen here in increasing order of price and sense.

They both had moon in the 2nd house aspecting Neptune. For prince mcree moon-neptune were conjunct. And for Elijah moon-neptune were trining transit wise + his natal moon opposing transit neptune in the transit synastry reading. What I'm thinking since both moons were in the 2nd aspecting Neptune is maybe Elijah was discarded somewhere in a very nasty, filthy, hidden dump site where things are unseen, trashed, not taken care of. Basically something similar to what happened with Prince..bc I'm realizing that Neptune can have many meanings. It can be garbage, drugs, gases, bodies of water.. and 2nd house which is related to Taurus, is what we take, posses, own, buy, get paid, our values, most importantly imo is the taking/giving aspect, it's transactional. Like in Prince Mcrees chart for example, he was found in a dumpster near some businesses.. that shows me the 2nd house can be related to things like the dynamics of trash companies, NOT the trash specifically. More so the act of taking something.. So we pay taxes to have our trash cans picked up every week right? so that could be somewhat related to the 2nd house. The transactional part. Bc I remember I mentioned in Elijahs synastry read, that he could have been sold to someone but it could actually be either or. Neptune is in the 11th house tho so that is more tied to community, unlike princes Neptune which was in the 2nd. So that changes things a bit.. and since Elijahs 911 call moon was in cancer that also makes it different.

Idk I'm just trying to throw things out there bc honestly this case is very complicated/complex. Maybe it could mean that he was thrown in a bio hazard area, maybe the person responsible was freaking out about where to discard Elijah and put him in the 1st place that comes to mind when they think about children.. near a hospital or related to child birth, child care, nearby a home or something with obvious attachment to Elijah. It's like the person couldn't think clearly so they kinda made a bad decision to place Elijah in place where those who really knew him would easily find him.

OR if a stranger took him, we would have to think like a guilty stranger who has no kids whatsoever, what's the 1st thought you would have at hiding a body? Could be anywhere where children are or anything associated with children, bc their mind couldn't come up with something better.. it's like their fucked up conscious got the best of them. Hope that makes sense.

The potential was insane. The fact that it was centered on Norman already got me, but Jack Reilly's existence and their life together? Like omg? First, that means that Norman is canonically gay / bi, which is both awesome and unexpected.

I really had a great time with this video game. It probably was my first narrative game (and more specifically, a game with choices, but I don't know how to say it in English) and I loved the experience. I played it a few times and also watched some let's play (I just finished one today, because a very well known French streamer just discovered Heavy Rain and I wanted to live this experience again). It's always cool. A lot of feelings, several linked points of vue, endearing characters... bref, it works, and it's hard to just move on after the end.

However, it's really hard to ignore how the whole game shows a typical straight male gaze. Like all the time, and it's not even subtle. Women are objectified for no purpose - just because they can do it, I guess? This is not just about David Cage's shower obsession (like really, how many shower scenes? is it a kink or something? for real, it happens too often to be ignored ahah), but how he portrays his female characters. It's quite painful to watch. How many sexual aggressions? We even have a particularly scary agression in a dream? Was any of it really necessary? Did they exist in any other way?

Oh, yes, we had Madison Paige. I liked her, but she was not an exception at all. She also was over sexualized - not surprising, at this point - but that's not all. Yes, she is smart and brave. But that doesn't erase the fact that she only exists to be here for Ethan Mars. She was the nice nurse that helped him every time he was hurt, because that's how women are supposed to be.

Gender roles are very stereotyped and it even starts in the firsts minutes of the game, when Grace is depicted like if she was so boring. She took care of the children all day, managed all the organization herself and is basically exhausted.

And when she comes home, what? Ethan didn't do anything. He has to wait for his wife to tell him what to do, to remember that yes, it's his kid's birthday and he should be more invested. So a very hard task, to get the table ready... except he doesn't even know where the plates are, how to open the placard (I don't remember the English word, sorry) and can't even take care of the material. But he did it, so I guess we should applaud?

And after that, Grace continues to set up everything, without any consideration, while he goes out to play with the kid. It brings him the good role. I guess that Grace would love to spend fun time with her children too, but she can't since she is the only one to be invested in his son's birthday organization.

So when I read that Norman Jayden had a boyfriend, I was just confused. Wtf David? Were you drunk or something? How could you even not think straight? I know that sometimes a strong enough misogyny can involuntarily become gay, but still. This is so far from what we saw in Heavy Rain. I was not expecting it to be somehow canon. But it is, and I take it. It's just so sad that we'll (probably) never see it as a game.

The fandom seems to do the job for all of us. It doesn't appear as dead as you say, really. I saw some AO3 fanfictions... but didn't read any of it yet. It's not that easy to start an English story when you're so far from being fluent. I already struggle to read in French due to my attention issues (or at least it is the main reason), so starting a story in English is something else - and way harder. I already did it, but not many times and my level stays way too low for me to don't see any difference. Anyway, I hope to be able to start some of them. I saw a lot of potential in a few Norman/Ethan stories and I don't want to miss it.

Well, now, I also hope that Norman/Jack fanfictions exist. I guess not, according to your post? If so, what a waste. We don't know much about them (or at least I do not), but already enough to write a very entertaining story. Jack Reilly obviously was a very skilled scientist. He worked on advanced technologies and Normand used them on the field. This is both revolutionary and fascinating.

Also, we have the whole addiction to triptocaine part. They unfortunately had that in common - Jack even died for it. That brings a deep meaning to all the times we saw Norman fight against his addiction. The fact that he couldn't stop and was sure to die because of it. It's even more significant to know that his love died from it. It's awful and dramatic. But for the same reason, I think that it has - again - a huge potential. A story about their common addiction and how they deal with it would be amazing.

It deserves to exist, really. Oh, and of course, Jack also deserves to survive. I want to see Norman and him happy together. Our poor FBI guy wasn't very lucky until now, so it has to change. I'm not sure that I couldn't support anything else ahah.

Ensign Ful-Vue II: The Restoration

So last month I got this quirky little 1950’s British made camera in a charity shop. An Ensign Ful-Vue II. A medium format camera which was a pseudo-TLR which worked more like a box camera as it had both a fixed aperture (f11) and a fixed shutter speed (1/30th).

It had seen better days as it had dirt and paint chips all over, the shutter release lever occasionally stuck after actuating the mechanism, the strap had pretty much had it and the lock/unlock knob for opening it had lost its cap. But surprisingly for its age the optical elements were only a touch dusty, and after a quick wipe were extremely clear and bright. Considering the condition of the glass and the fact it took 120 film (very much still readily available) I decided to try and get this camera looking as good as possible.

First step was to strip it down and mask up any areas I didn’t want paint getting to. This camera is really quite basic in design, so I had the whole thing stripped down with 3 screws and 1 clip removed.

When masking up the film caddy part, I took extra care to make sure this original advertisement sticker didn’t get damaged.

I decided that to get the best finish, removal of the old paint would probably be best. I initially tried removing it using wire brush tools that came with my rotary tool, and although it was removing the paint it was burning through the brushes too fast. 5 brushes dead and all that was done was 60% of one side. An upgrade was needed.

I started treating the surface with isopropyl alcohol then attacking it with a much bigger brush that could handle higher RPMs without losing its bristles. What took 20 mins with the rotary tool was 5 mins with the drill/brush combo. Progress!

I briefly reassembled the camera at this stage to see how it looked. I was tempted to polish up the metal really well at this point and either have it unpainted or some sort of two-tone effect, but decided to try and keep it original as possible as per the initial plan. I disassembled it again and cracked open the can of matte black spray paint.

Whilst waiting for the spray paint to dry, I dealt with that sticking shutter release lever. I oiled the mechanism using a cotton bud and some oil. I didn’t want to put too much on in case it flicked onto the glass elements during use. That said, unlike other cameras I owned I could at least strip this down easily and clean it off if it did.

With the mechanism working more smoothly than it has done in decades, all that was left was to clean the glass elements.

The moment of truth. The removal of masking tape and reassembly. And I must say I’m very happy with the results. The finish on one side isn’t perfect and it seems I’d scratched the paint ever so slightly when moving the pieces after spraying, but even with these minor points it looks so so much better.

All that’s left to do now is source a new strap and to see if I can fabricate a new cap for the lock/unlock knob.

Anyway, I liked Vueko right away. Did not realize she was an all time favorite but figured she'd go in top MiA characters. Later events in the season then added to how I saw her (the elaboration in that post is under the picture of me holding a belavue drawing and crying lol), even more as i read the manga and participated in fandom, but I was basically very fond of Vue right away and then liked her more and more.

I found Belaf likably quirky-sweet as soon as we meet him in ep1 but wasn't *particularly* interested. It was e7/e8, his pain and tragedy and the depth of what his transformation meant, which really got it started, and then it grew even more just like for V. Since then i just get ..aaa... sooo much fun out of thinkin' about him, both alone and in the context of his interpersonal relationships which were only briefly (but deftly and strongly) sketched out in canon....... i can pinpoint my return to 'writing for people other than just myself' as the night after episode 8 aired when i couldn't not start writing fic about the super brief scene of Vue feeding him. even for other fandoms and original work, i seriously doubt i'd be sharing writing online right now if not for B and V.

Waz took the longest! although i'm a fan of his seiyuu, during the airing of s2 i didn't have strong feelings about him, negative or positive. once i had seen the full arc and started making fanwork of and talking to people about the other two sages, i realized there was a weird old man shaped hole in my conception of their lives. so i was like ok let me think about him a bit. people come down various ways on how they imagine his interiority and feelings towards the other characters, whether he merely saw them as tools or treasured them as people or some combination. while i'm open to a range of Waz takes, i personally came to see and depict him in the way that i found most appealing -- quite sincerely fond of B and V, loves them even (not sure he'd use that word though), not remotely malicious, but fettered by commitment to his visions and an associated empathy blind spot that leads to quite awful and tragic things in the end. once i felt like i liked and understood all of them, it clicked so fantastically and unlocked so much fun to be had with fanwork of all three's various moments and dynamics. it's now hard to think back to a time when i wasn't fascinated by all three of them. : )
